How to get the Tilde Key for Fallout 3 Console Working (Again!)

Many of us moving from Windows XP to Vista are getting horribly frustrated trying to get the tilde key to work.
Without which you cannot access the console in Fallout 3 (or Oblivion and Morrowind)

It drove me crazy because whenever I test my mods I must use the tilde key for the console a lot.
In fact without the tilde key for the console modding with GECK would be a nightmare for me.

Finally I found out why it doesn't work.
Microsoft's Vista has a device driver loaded called:
Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver
It prevents the tilde key working in Fallout 3 and Oblivion and Morrowind.

This is what you do:

  • Open Control Panel
  • System and Maintenance
  • Device Manager
  • Click on HUMAN INTERFACE DEVICES
  • MICROSOFT eHOME INFRARED TRANSCEIVER
  • Uninstall it
  • Play the Game
  • Press TILDE ~ and you have the console
It will re-install itself after every reboot.

For me it is the MOST annoying part of Vista when playing Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout3 or any program or game that uses the tilde ~ key that this driver disables. It will re-install itself after every reboot. Which is really annoying - I followed a few Google links that told me how to remove MICROSOFT eHOME INFRARED TRANSCEIVER permanantly by messing with the registry and other areas of Vista but it seems to still re-install on next boot.
So, I have a shortcut to the system folder in my game shortcuts folder and go through the un-install routine every time I want to play the game.
